Can Yoga be Used for Weight Loss?

If you're on a mission to lose weight, this blog is for you! When it comes to weight, it's best to start thinking holistically about your lifestyle – including stress levels, diet, alcohol consumption, and work-life balance. Incorporating a yoga practice should be considered as a way to switch off, connect with yourself, and give you time to gain headspace and perspective. This blog aims to explore the vital role of yoga and its many benefits. Let’s dive in.

The Benefits of Yoga

Although yoga is about finding your spiritual center and mind-body connection, it is also a type of exercise that can help you burn calories. Here are a few particular aspects of the practice that make it good for weight loss:

It Reduces Stress

Stress causes your body to store fat, especially in the midsection, and any type of exercise or movement that promotes mindfulness, such as yoga, can help lower stress levels. Once your nervous system is soothed and cortisol levels are low, your body is in a much better position to organically lose weight.

It Can Improve Sleep

Being more mindful and having less stress can improve your sleep, which leads to better regulation of the pathways of the brain that regulate weight. People who regularly sleep less than the recommended seven hours a night are more likely to have higher average body mass indexes and develop obesity than those who sleep more.

It is Budget Friendly

The good news is that you really don’t need much to get started with yoga. Invest in a high quality yoga mat and make sure it provides enough cushioning for your body. You can then find a yoga class near you, start practicing at home, or even stream online classes. The key is to find a source that you love.

How to Get Started

When you want to lose weight, it is best to approach it with a combo of eating well, sleeping at least 7 hours a night, incorporating meditation & mindfulness, taking time out, and exercising regularly. But, of course, in order to make healthier habits stick, they have to feel right for you.

Yoga is a series of poses to help create an experience, but some are better for building muscle and weight loss than others. Try adding the following poses to your routine to help you out:

Downward Facing Dog Yoga Pose

Downward dog has you bend your body into a V shape, with your feet on the ground with your toes facing forward and your hands on the ground in front of you. Holding this position can help work your arms, legs, and abs.

Warrior Yoga Pose

This involves standing with both feet rooted into the ground. Your back leg is angled outward as your front foot points forward. Your front knee should be bent, while your back leg is straight. Your upper body should be straight, with your head and torso pointed in front of you. Your arms and hands are held above you. All of the warrior poses are great for activating your legs and core.

Chair Yoga Pose

Start from standing and then bend at your knees while pushing your butt back, like you’re sitting down in an invisible chair.  This is a great glute and quad activation.

Plank Yoga Pose

This position involves holding your body in a straight, horizontal line, with your hands and toes on the ground. Holding this pose will activate your core.

Plank Pose Yoga

Side Plank Yoga Pose

Side plank is similar to a “regular” plank, just with one arm and leg on the ground, while the other is balanced above it. It also activates your core along with some of your side oblique muscles.
